Makes a shiny, bright red, succulent candy apple that is perfect for Halloween parties, as party favors, gifts or snacks. Top with a fancy ribbon and wrap, and this is a wonderful Fall holiday treat.
8 Wood craft sticks
8 Apples (your favorite variety, fresh and hard)
3 Cups granulated sugar
1/2 Cup Light corn syrup
1/2 Cup water
Red hots (cinnamon) candies
1 tsp. food coloring (red)
Lightly grease a cookie sheet with butter and set aside. Start by inserting a wood craft stick into the bottoms of the apples. Combine together the light corn syrup, sugar and water in heavy saucepan over a medium heat. Let heat to to 270 degrees to 290 degrees F without stirring. When ready, a dab of syrup dropped into cool water will form firm threads that are still pliable. When ready, remove the mixture from the heat, then stir in cinnamon candies and the red food coloring until mixed. Don’t over stir.
Hold each apple by the stick and twirl in the syrup, making sure all sides are covered well. When you take the apple out of the syrup, turn it several times so that any drips will stick to the apple. Place the candy apples on the prepared cookie sheet and allow to cool completely before wrapping.
More options: When you take out the apples from the syrup, quickly roll in chopped nuts or your favorite candies. Once cooled, you can dip them in chocolate or drizzle with chocolate. The options are endless and you can make them as simple or as fancy as you wish! The apples pictured above were rolled in nuts.
